This is a log of my general training for staying active. This has included training for the Adirondack Canoe Classic (The 90 Miler), triathlons, and various other competitive events.

Back on the Christiana in DE. Same workout as previous weeks. The 90 is now in limbo due to some registration issues and boat changes. My dad and I have decided to make the decision this Sunday on go or no go.

Back to the 90
My dad and I are going back to the 90 miler this year. We are not listed in the official participant list but will be joining another pair for a C-4. I am excited because I haven't done the race in 4 years and the last time I did it was in a kayak.

Raritan Canoe Race
I completed the Delaware and Raritan Canal Canoe Race yesterday with my Dad and oldest son A. It was a gorgeous day for a canoe race - ~65 degrees and sunny. I will say the water was freezing so other than cold feet at portages we stayed dry.
The race itself is VERY informal and a quick 10.6 miles along the canal. There were a variety of boats - kayaks, C-2's, even Olympic canoes where the paddlers did all 10 miles on one knee. Personally, we race in a cedar strip canoe named the "Slenda Glenda". This was the same boat that I did the Long Lake Boat Regatta in a few years ago. It was a lot of fun and great to race with both my dad and A.
Also, it was great to get moving again. After 6 weeks of limited activity, hopefully this will get my butt in gear again.

Paddling on the Christina
Went canoeing with my father on the Christina River in Wilmington. It was my first time paddling this season - outside of little trips with the kids. I definitely missed it this year. I also borrowed my dad's bike to train with for the next two weeks.

Long Lake Long Boat Regatta
Well we did the Long Lake Long Boat Regatta and it was a great race. Lately I have only done the 90-miler which is a huge race and big production. This race was on a smaller scale and a lot more laid back. Brian McDonald from Macs canoes does a great job as race director and it was great to see him get to race as well.
The war canoe was a lot of fun, it reminded me of rowing in college with having so many paddlers staying in sync. I was in 6th seat, one from the stern. Kerry did a great job guiding us to a third place overall finish. We hung with the 1st and 2nd place boats through the first 5 miles but after going back under the Long Lake bridge they took off. We had a good distance on the 4th place boat but they took us by surprise at the second turn around as they were closing fast. We then pushed into high gear for the last 5 miles to the finish. We finished the 15 miles in 2:11:15
Thanks again to Kerry for letting my dad and I into his boat for the race.
Results are here we were in boat 405 under "Kerry Newell"

On the Water Again
One last morning on the water before our race this weekend. We did our typical hour of hard paddling on the Christiana in DE. Saw several crews out there rowing, reminded me of my days at Bucknell.

Canoeing after a storm
Stormed hard this weekend which made for good paddling on the Brandywine. Spent about an hour on the water in a good current. It is a shame the water isn't always that high.
